Pour fabriquer un moule de violon, il est indispensable d’utiliser un matériau de bonne qualité, offrant une excellente stabilité dimensionnelle, une dureté suffisante pour ne pas s’user trop vite sous l’action accidentelle des abrasifs, et une bonne tenue à l’humidité pour ne pas gonfler dans les zones de collage des tasseaux.
Je vous propose 2 matériaux selon vos attentes :
– Un contreplaqué de bouleau de très bonne qualité, en 9 plis (12 mm) et 11 plis (15 mm), avec des couches bien jointives et adhérentes. Il se découpe et se travaille facilement sans trop s’ébarber. Il comporte en général une face claire et uniforme et une face un peu plus veinée. Il peut comporter quelques rapiéçages visibles en surface mais, lorsque c’est le cas, je m’arrange pour qu’ils tombent hors des zones de découpe du moule.
– Tricoya, which belongs to the MDF family but which properties have nothing to do with the MDF sold in DIY stores. It is made of acetylated wood fibers bonded under very high pressure with a very resistant VOC-free water-repellent resin, which gives it exceptional properties:
– Dimensional stability far superior to any other type of wood panel. It does not deform and cuts with extreme precision, without flaking and leaving perfectly smooth edges.
– High mechanical resistance in all directions thanks to its high density and the exceptional cohesion provided by the resin.
– Complete insensitivity to moisture and temperature variations. It is specified to last several decades in contact with permanent humidity. It does not warp nor swell.
Choix de l’épaisseur 12 ou 15 mm :
A thinner 12 mm mould allows easier access to the linings area when gluing and profiling them. A thicker 15 mm mould helps to better guide the verticality of the rids along its edge and therefore helps to achieve a greater geometric precision of the instrument outline. It's up to you to make your choice according to the importance you give to these criteria. In general, a thin mold is more suitable for experienced luthiers or those who are not afraid to create asymmetries during construction, and a thick mold is more suitable for those who are less confortable with the rib bending process or for maniacs of the dimensional perfection.
